The capital Kiev was hit by numerous explosions, seen in photos and described in news reports. A source described to Insider hearing explosions and gunfire near its Boryspil International Airport.
Kharviv, a major city near the border with Russia, was also hit by blasts. A source there told Insider they heard explosions. Russian troops entered across the border just 20 miles from the city, The New York Times reported.
Explosions were also reported in Kramatorsk, Dnipro, Odessa, Mariupol, Lutsk and Ivano-Frankivsk, and Russian troops are believed to have crossed the border near Chernihiv and Kherson, according to reports from Reuters and The New York Times.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been brewing for years, but has escalated dramatically in recent weeks.
Russia has gathered large numbers of troops around Ukraine – up to 190,000, according to US estimates – in the region’s largest military operation since World War II.
On Monday, Putin acknowledged the independence claims of Ukraine’s breakaway Luhansk and Donetsk regions, ordering troops there for what he described as a limited peacekeeping operation in the east of the country.
Less than 72 hours later, Putin authorized a full-scale attack on Ukraine. In the hours that followed, explosions pounded towns around Ukraine, several hundred kilometers from the previous conflict zone. Ukrainian officials have reported fighting on its borders with Russia and dozens of casualties.
The new wave of hostilities has extended the clash from a limited incursion into disputed lands into Europe’s most serious armed conflict in at least a decade.
