Elden Ring: What are the yellow lines on the map near the Grace Sites?

To say the open world of Elden Ring is big is an understatement. The map is so big that it can’t even fit on an entire screen! It’s so easy to get lost between catacombs, field bosses, and everything in the Lands Between. FromSoftware basically said, “here’s the game, you get it”. This is a good thing, but some players are having trouble understanding certain things on the map. Specifically, they wonder what are the gold and yellow lines on the map near the Sites of Grace? Here’s what those lines on your map actually mean.

What do the yellow lines mean in Elden Ring?

The golden lines on the map in Elden Ring point to your next objective. They are called the Councils of Grace in the lore, and they guide Tarnish on their journey. If you ever get stuck, just follow these lines and you’ll be back on track in no time.

It’s not just limited to the map either. When you rest in a Ste of Grace, some of them will emanate a sort of trail of golden dust across the sky. Not all of them do, only those that point to a certain landmark in the game that leads to a possible quest or dungeon do. The game doesn’t hold your hand too much, giving you some sort of quest log or something in the UI to show you your next destination.

The trade-off here is that there’s a sense of exploration you need to complete for tidbits of lore, new goods to collect, and bosses to conquer. These golden lines serve at the bare minimum to guide you in the direction you need to follow. The choice is yours. You are not prevented from progressing further if you do not follow the lines either.

Granted, it can get confusing if you’re traveling east towards Caelid and you start to see the Grace sites showing the lines as well. The correct way to go through the game’s main story is to head north from Limgrave, through Stormveil, then Raya Lucaria Academy, etc.

Even when you complete an entire area, these lines will still appear. The only way to really keep track is to use the map’s marker options to indicate if you’ve cleared an entire area of his boss and spot mics.

Ring of Elden is available now on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series S/X and PC.
