"Highlights" of discussions:
The video provides evidence of the value of embedding of Place-based Education
(PBE) into the curriculum.
In this region, our PBE exists, although it is more teacher-owned and specific to
individual teachers. Some teachers do projects that would be called "PBE" from a personal passion. Also, there are some similarities in our region:
· the State requires service learning for graduation;
· Junior Achievement is a program involving certain classes at certain grade levels; · Expeditionary Learning involves students' in the community and writing about their experiences;
· there are integrated biology and reading assignments at some grade levels; NASA/Wallops offers interdisciplinary teaching resources, but it seems easier to get folks from the western shore interested than those on the eastern shore.
So there's a curricular stimulus for students' involvement in community-based projects. But it's not pervasive.
