DEF-CCAP
aims to boost the college-going potential and career preparation of
young people on the lower Delmarva Peninsula. The DEF staff are
committed to the students we serve, devoted to helping them learn about,
aspire to, prepare for, apply to, finance, and complete college or other
post-secondary educational training.
DEF-CCAP
advisors help students of all ages via this website, at our office in
the Wicomico Public Library, in local schools, and at community events.
We collaborate with area high school guidance counselors, and network
with other organizations and businesses in the region that sponsor scholarships,
to provide the searchable database of local scholarship opportunities
and financial aid information on this website, free to all residents
of the 7 counties we serve (Sussex, DE; Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset,
and Dorchester, MD; Accomack and Northampton, VA).

Funding
is Awarded to Delmarva Education Foundation for its College and Career
Access Program
(August
22, 2008) The Delmarva Education Foundation (DEF) is a recipient
of a $22,250 grant from the Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural
Development Assistance Fund (MAERDAF) that will enable it to continue
to offer its College and Career Access Program (DEF-CCAP) during the
'08-09 school year to a wide range of students and potential students.
DEF
is a local nonprofit organization that works to connect the business
and education communities on the Lower Delmarva Peninsula . It provides
local residents with a broad range of educational resources from its
office, which is located within the Wicomico Public Library in Salisbury
; online; and through outreach efforts into the community and public
schools. With the resources provided by the MAERDAF grant, DEF will
be able to extend the advising services it offers to include all grades
in three high schools: Crisfield and Washington High Schools in
Somerset County , and Wicomico High School in Wicomico County
. Service is also available at DEF headquarters in the Wicomico Public
Library. Grant funds will help support DEF's popular Financial Aid Clearinghouse,
where foundation staff has collected information on regional scholarships
and financial aid specifically designated for students in DEF's service
area of the Lower Delmarva Peninsula*. The Clearinghouse is easily searched
from DEF's website (www.delmarvaed.org). More than 800 resources are
listed and updated annually.
For
the past three years, through DEF-CCAP, advisors have been assisting
students and others who wish to explore options for post-secondary training
and education. DEF advisors work one-on-one with those who want to investigate
opportunities for college or other career training as they prepare,
take qualifying tests, complete applications, and find funding to pursue
their goals.
“This
MAERDAF award provides important support for our DEF-CCAP program,”
says Katherine Harting , DEF's executive director. “It ensures that
all students in the high schools where we are currently able to serve
will have access to our in-school advisors. Further, the funding for
our Financial Aid Clearinghouse will help those in our region who seek
scholarships and those who have scholarship dollars to give find each
other more easily.”
Established
in 2000, MAERDAF offers financial support to rural-serving nonprofit
organizations. The Rural Maryland Council administers the grant program.
Recipients are selected by a review board comprised of representatives
from the Maryland departments of Agriculture, Housing and Community
Development, Health and Mental Hygiene, Natural Resources, Business
and Economic Development, and the Rural Maryland Council.
*DEF's
service area spans three states, seven counties, and fourteen public
school districts to include the business region surrounding Salisbury
MD.
DEF
College/Career Access Program Expands to Serve More Students
(November 27, 2007)The
Delmarva Education Foundation College/Career Access Program (DEF-CCAP)
has expanded to serve more local students by securing additional grant
funding from the Rural Maryland Council
and the Maryland Higher Education Commission
(MHEC).
The purpose of DEF-CCAP is to help students learn
about, aspire to, prepare for, apply to, finance, and complete college
or other post-secondary educational training. All
students are eligible for services but low-income, minority, and first-generation
students are targeted to reach out to those who might not otherwise
graduate from high school and go on to college.
DEF
began this important program with a 2006-2007 start-up grant from the
Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to serve juniors and seniors in Wicomico
High School in Wicomico County and Washington High School in Somerset
County. For the 2007-2008 school year DEF is honored to be receiving
substantial support from MHEC via the University of Maryland Eastern
Shore to provide DEF-CCAP services to the GEAR
UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate
Programs) student cohorts (currently 9th graders) in the aforementioned
schools plus Crisfield High School in Somerset County. In 2007, DEF
has also been awarded grants totaling almost $30,000 from the Rural
Maryland Council to enable DEF-CCAP advisors to serve the sophomore
classes as well as juniors and seniors through the current school year
at these schools.
DEF-CCAP
services include career exploration and interest assessments, personalized
motivational strategies to encourage success in high school, awareness
of the benefits of higher education and taking challenging courses like
AP classes in high school, college fair visits and virtual college tours,
resume-writing and work skills advise, study skills and test prep tactics,
financial literacy workshops, college application assistance, financial
aid information and scholarship searches. Through the MHEC grant we
will also be providing tutors for students preparing for the High School
Assessments and parent basic computer skills classes for GEAR UP families.
