Foundation
Awards $190,000 to Expand College Access
for Low-income Students in Maryland
Initial
Funding Is Part of Million-dollar Initiative
LANSDOWNE
, VA -
Recognizing that college access programs can dramatically boost the
college-going potential of Maryland 's
students, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is investing $1 million during
2005 and 2006 to help build such programs across the state. Today the
Foundation is inaugurating this funding with two grants worth $95,000
each to communities in Montgomery ,
Somerset , and Wicomico
Counties .
The programs will use the grants to help more students, especially those
from low-income areas, prepare to attend postsecondary education.
“These
organizations have demonstrated their commitment to expanding the opportunities
that students in Maryland
have to attend college,” said Dr. Matthew J. Quinn, Executive Director
of the Foundation. “We are proud to support them, and we look forward
to the impact they will have on the lives of these students, their families,
and their communities.”
The
recipients, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Educational Foundation's CollegeTracks
and the Delmarva Education Foundation, are both nonprofit
organizations. With the funds, they will expand their existing services
and initiate college access programs in several Maryland high schools.
The programs will focus especially on low-income families and potential
first-generation college students through one-on-one services that include
financial and academic counseling, test preparation, career guidance,
and last-dollar scholarships. Specifics on each grant are below.
The
Foundation's funding continues a similar initiative it has established
in its home state of Virginia .
It has been inspired in this initiative by college access programs underway
in almost 40 states that have helped to improve educational and career
opportunities, boost incomes, and raise tax bases. It also recognizes
that college graduates earn, on average, $1 million more over a lifetime
than individuals who never advance beyond a high school degree. In the
spring, the Foundation will announce the remaining recipients in the
Maryland college access
program.
